In Jewish tradition, we pause for a solemn moment before celebrating. We break a glass at a wedding, we remember being slaves in Egypt before entering Shabbat — and last week, we paused to remember fallen soldiers on Yom HaZikaron as we prepared to joyfully celebrate Israel's independence on Yom Ha'atzmaut.
We observed both Israeli "Yamim" (days) last week with our students. We gathered our community around the Mirowitz flagpole for moments of silence on Yom Hazikaron.
Then we celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut the next day with singing, dancing, games and (yes!) chocolate (view photos from the day here).
All the while, our 8th graders were experiencing the joy authentically as they celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut in at Ramat David Air Force Base, which opens to the public only once a year (on Yom Ha'atzmaut) for an impressive air show!
Each year at this time, Mirowitz students experience one of the many gifts of a Jewish day school education: a connection with Israel. That connection is an integral part of who we are as a school community. Our students learn Hebrew language daily with lessons rich in Israeli poetry, stories and songs.
They dive into social studies lessons that help them understand the significance of the land and the country to our people. They have Israeli friends, know the taste of hummus and shakshuka, and learn from our Shinshinit, a young Israeli who teaches at Mirowitz as a gap year before national service to Israel.
As our students get older, we encourage them to grapple with current affairs and to understand Israel's complexities. Our middle schoolers take three trimester-long courses in Israeli history and culture.

And by the time our students graduate, they know for certain that the story of Israel is our story as a Jewish people. It's a part of their Jewish identities, right up there with saying, "Next year in Jerusalem."

Our hearts are filled with pride...for Israel AND for our students. Both give us hope for a bright future.

Our Middle School baseball team is off to a 3-1 start, with back to back wins over Principia, including Tuesday's 11-6 win.
In that game, 6th grader Benny earned the win, pitching 2 innings and allowing just 1 run on 1 hit. He also contributed with 3 RBI's in the game, and a sparkling defensive gem that he turned into a double play from his 2nd base position.

6th grader Sammy G had a great game at the plate, going 3-3 with a double.  He scored 3 runs. Next up, a game Sunday in Clayton, and Tuesday at Whitfield.

Between meals of falafel and hummus, our 8th graders had a meaningful tiyul (trip) that changed their perspectives as future Jewish leaders. Today they had a "press conference" to answer questions from younger students.
We want to thank our Elijah's Circle donors (who contribute $1,800 or more annually).

If that is you (or could be you), please join us for cocktails, hors
d'oeuvers and an opportunity to visit with Morah Raquel at her historic home in Lafayette Square.

Our Parent In Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the start of the flowering of our redemption. Shield it with Your love. Spread over it the shelter of Your peace, Guide its leaders and advisors with Your light and Your truth.  Establish for them Your good counsel.  Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land.  Cause them to inherit, our God, deliverance.
