"You shall tell your children on that day: it is because of what Adonai did for me when I came forth out of Egypt." (Exodus 13:8)
At Mirowitz, we know that we must not only transmit knowledge, but do so in a way that ignites curiosity and lasting memories.
This is why we invest in adventures to the prairie, to the deep South, the state legislature...and this week, to Egypt. (Okay, so it was a virtual Egypt.)
On Wednesday, our kindergartners woke up at the crack of dawn, dressed up as Israelites, and dramatized the story of the Exodus. Morah Sagit led them through the Sea of Reeds, and Reb Scott and Rabbi Scott Shafrin waited for them on the other side with a story to tell: a midrash about not rejoicing when your enemies have perished.
The young Israelites baked matzah over a campfire and rejoiced in their freedom. (See more photos from the morning here.) Now they have experienced a kindergarten version of the Exodus.
Every year at this time, they will learn that very same story again. They will grow to understand that the Passover story does not change each year, but their understanding of it changes.
Thus, their appreciation of the holiday will evolve and mature.
We create learners by nourishing the skills necessary to seek out knowledge, telling stories, listening to stories and asking questions. Lucky for us, Passover offers many opportunities to do that. May the stories you hear and tell this week ignite your curiosity and grow your appreciation for the holiday of our liberation.

How does a field trip to Jefferson City turn social studies into leadership development that ensures our future? For one thing, Mirowitz students don’t go to our state capitol as tourists. They go as activists.
Tourists sit in the gallery above the congressional floor and observe legislative proceedings. Our Mirowitz social activists become personally invested in those proceedings.
They have, after all, spent weeks researching and writing opinion pieces on several of the bills being discussed.
Tourists walk through the capitol building, passing by doors of their representatives and senators.
Our Mirowitz social activists knock on their doors. They have scheduled individual appointments and have learned to express their opinion about a house bill. They’ve practiced lobbying etiquette, including the importance of eye contact and manners. The world is their classroom, and active learning yields authentic and lasting knowledge.
We are so proud of each of our 4th, 6th and 7th grade activists whose voices were heard in Jefferson City. Thanks to Tracy McCreery, Joe Adams, LaDonna Appelbaum, Ian Mackey, Doug Clemons, Paula Brown, Ben Keethley, Adam Schwadron and Gretchen Bangert for empowering us to use our voices for change, and to Stacey Newman, Jill Schupp and Irl Scissors for helping us prepare for the trip.

Mirowitz students talk about their 3rd grade overnight as one of the many formative experiences they have during their years here! And over the past 24 hours, these lucky kids hiked through woods, learned about the forest biome, sketched their ecological discoveries, strengthened their community, and washed it all down with s'mores. (See more photos here.)
Thanks to Morah Alex,Morah Priscilla andMorah Lizzie for planning a meaningful overnight for our students, and to Reb Scott andAlmafor helping lead the experience.

Our Parent In Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the start of the flowering of our redemption. Shield it with Your love. Spread over it the shelter of Your peace, Guide its leaders and advisors with Your light and Your truth. Establish for them Your good counsel. Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land. Cause them to inherit, our God, deliverance. Place the crown of victory upon them. Give the land peace and everlasting joy to its inhabitants.
