In Jewish tradition, we pause for a solemn moment before celebrating. We break a glass at a wedding, we remember being slaves in Egypt before entering Shabbat -- and this week, we paused to remember the soldiers who have fallen on Yom HaZikaron as we prepared to joyfully celebrate Israel's independence on Yom Ha'Atzmaut.
We observed both Israeli "Yamim" (days) this week with our students. We gathered our community around the Mirowitz flagpole for moments of silence on Yom Hazikaron. (Watch the beautiful ceremony here.)
We celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut here at Mirowitz with singing, dancing, games and (yes!) chocolate (view photos from the day here). And our 8th graders felt the joy authentically when they celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut in Tiberias!  (Read their Israel blog and see photos here.)
Our students experienced one of the many gifts of a Jewish day school education: a connection with Israel.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
At Mirowitz, this connection is an integral part of who we are. Our students learn Hebrew language daily with lessons rich in Israeli poetry, stories and songs. They dive into social studies lessons that help them understand the significance of the land and the country to our people.
They have Israeli friends, know the taste of hummus and shakshuka, and learn from our Shinshin, a young Israeli who teaches at Mirowitz as a gap year before national service to Israel.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
As our students get older, we encourage them to grapple with current affairs and to understand Israel's complexities. Our middle schoolers take three trimester-long courses in Israeli history and culture.

And by the time our students graduate, they know for certain that the story of Israel is our story as a Jewish people. It's a part of their Jewish identities, right up there with saying, "Next Year in Jerusalem."

Our hearts are filled with pride...for Israel AND for our students. Both give us hope for a bright future.

Shabbat Shalom,

Morah Cheryl

Mirowitz 1st graders also stayed undefeated after a 30-19 win last weekend. The difference in this game is defense, and our first graders recorded more outs than their opponents.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
Our 4th/5th grade baseball team remained undefeated after a 19-11 win Sunday.  Benny A led the team with 6 RBI's, including a bases-clearing triple in the final inning to put the game out of reach. With the win, the team improves to 3-0 on the season.

Our 2nd/3rd grade team dropped their first game, a 17-15 loss in what Coach Drew Newman called a very competitive game.
Our middle school team fell to Whitfield on Wednesday 14-4.  With the loss, the team falls to 1-2 on the short season. Our 8th graders will be back for a road game at Priory on Thursday.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
Between meals of falafel and hummus, our 8th graders are having intensely meaningful experiences that are changing their perspectives as future Jewish leaders. Here are some excerpts:
pbloom@mirowitz.org
Sam:  Tefilah on Masada was very nice. I felt like we were in ancient shoes and praying in the exact same spot as the people who lived on top of Mount Masada 2,000 years ago. Reading Torah there is an experience I’ll always remember.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
Jacob: On Ammunition Hill, the Israelis fought for survival and control of Jerusalem in 1967. As the Israeli army began to overcome an overwhelming number of Jordanians, more and more control of the Land of Israel seemed to fall into the hands of the Israelis.
IDF stands for Israeli Defense Force, and they succeeded in defending the land, but with a staggering 36 casualties and losses on that site.
pbloom@mirowitz.org
AJ:  The Dead Sea was a weird but fun experience. The salt pulls the oil from your skin and makes it feel slippery. It’s also very calming having your body float when you sit back into the water. I unsuccessfully attempted to make a salt fortress with my friends. I will remember the Dead Sea forever.

Our hearts are with our Mirowitz families who have relatives in Ukraine, and who have already suffered losses. Our concern for the Jews in Ukraine, in Russia, and all over the world continues to rise as we are brought back to darker times of war and division.

May God who makes peace in the heavens bring peace upon us, upon all Israel and all the world.

Thank you, all of you, for supporting this wonderful school that cares so much about each student, about their Jewish identities, about their connection with Israel, and about their intellectual growth. Thank you for prioritizing support services and financial aid so that kids like me can grow up in a place like this. Thank you to my teachers! Each one of you saw my potential and pushed me to become my best. And thank you Mirowitz…for the solid foundation that made the end (so far!) just the beginning of a meaningful, accomplished, and exciting life.

Our Parent In Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the start of the flowering of our redemption. Shield it with Your love. Spread over it the shelter of Your peace, Guide its leaders and advisors with Your light and Your truth.  Establish for them Your good counsel.  Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land.  Cause them to inherit, our God, deliverance.
